As the company reflects a year after the inception of our New Hires program, the progress of our traders and the program itself is drawing excitement. This program introduces Gelber’s core message “you answer to yourself as a trader and that is the beauty of the industry. You must treat this as your own little business and you are the CEO“ said “new” hire Dylan.you answer to yourself as a trader and that is the beauty of the industry. Adam Shamlian, a UChicago graduate and former intern, began his trading career in the new hire program where he decided to focus on discretionary trading fixed income. Since, Adam has transitioned into our algorithmic trading group to research his long list of ideas. He explained that ”if someone wants to learn what being a trader is all about, this is it. There is no 18 month purgatory of being a clerk. Gelber raises people to be traders right out of the gate, and this program succeeds at laying the first bricks in that process. The environment is pedagogical, collaborative, encouraging, self-reflective”.
Another new hire, Wes, explains that the program gives them the “freedom to explore your own ideas and strategies, a chance to try out algorithmic trading if you please, and an opportunity to trade basically any product that you like. Last but not least, technology that helps to ensure that we have everything we need to succeed. It is why Gelber is such a successful company”.
This fun loving group brings an incredible spirit to the firm. Jessy Gelber, Director of Talent Acquisition, jokingly admits “Even if I didn’t hire good traders, at least they are great guys”. You can easily find them on a Friday night organizing their own happy hours to talk about their grueling trading week- they are not just coworkers- they have become really good friends.
After 12 months on the job, you can find these not so new “new hires” across the firm trading real money in a range of trading groups working on different asset classes (currencies, fixed income, energies, equities) and styles (algorithmic, thematic, event driven).
